The Types of a Tank Level Measurement Device
There are many uses and applications of the tank level. In its most basic and fundamental form, it is simply a device used to indicate the distance between two points on your property. Today, tanks are measured in both metric measurements and American customary units, and they are often used as a measurement device for other purposes as well. Tank level measuring devices may be used in a variety of capacities, and they include radar level transmitters and pressure gauge type instruments.
The tank level indicator uses a beam sensor coupled with a lens to detect changes in elevation. The difference in elevation results in the measurement of the height above the earth's surface. This basic mechanism is extremely accurate, but advances in the type of sensor that is used also dramatically enhance the accuracy of the measurement. The two most common types of sensors employed in tank level indication devices are the capacitive and the resistive transmitter, although there are some others available.
Tank level measurement devices can measure both vertical and horizontal levels, and they are sometimes used to indicate the depth of wells. Many water storage tanks are conventionally placed in horizontal position. These days however, many water storage tanks are conventionally placed in vertical position to prevent them from tipping over, which is usually caused by incorrect placement. If the tank were to tip over, there would be a great risk of catastrophic explosion or other water loss, which could be very serious.
Capacitive sensors work by detecting changes in pressure or temperature, and they sense whether the area of sampling is elevated or low. They work by receiving information through their pressure transducers, and they convert this into an electric signal that can be processed by the computer. Resistive (or non-contact) sensors work by measuring changes in either temperature or pressure. The difference in the signals produced by these two types of sensors is often used to indicate elevations in various regions. These types of detectors have the additional advantage of not requiring any form of mechanical interferences.
There are many different types of tank level indicators. The most commonly used types are air-tight tapes and metal-tape gauges. Air-tight tapes are commonly used as tank level gauges because they can detect even very small differences in pressure. These tapes can either be wound tightly around the container in question or else they can be wound loosely, so that a tiny bit of air space is left at all points where the tape is fitted.
Metal-tape gauges, on the other hand, are designed to detect changes in elevation. In order to perform this type of continuous level indicator, the entire circumference of the container is measured using a continuous level sensor that has been fitted on the end of a flexible wire cable. This measurement is then converted into an electrical signal that can be read by a transducer. This type of gauge has a number of advantages over its close relative, the air-tight tape measure. For instance, continuous level sensors do not require manual inflation; moreover, they can detect small variations even between measurements taken at different locations, whereas tapes require manual inflation of tanks to get normal readings.
Other types of continuous level measurement devices are hydraulic pumps, which are used in the storage tanks for hydraulic production. These pumps are fitted with detectors that can detect even very small variations in pressure. Also available are differential pressure measuring devices, which measure elevations in the containers. They are usually powered by electric motors and measure elevations more rapidly than the conventional elevators. Finally, there are continuous level indicators that use radio waves to detect changes in level. These kinds of indicators are generally used for purposes other than the storage tanks for which they were designed.
A relatively new kind of level measurement device that is gaining popularity nowadays is the radar gun. A radar gun is capable of detecting differences in elevations much faster than conventional elevation measuring devices, and it can also detect small surface irregularities such as cracks. The gun can be used for many purposes such as in the oil and gas exploration, the mining industry, and the building industry. This instrument may be mounted on top of a vehicle or operated from a portable base.
