Water level, also called gauge reading, is the level of water level relative to a specific vertical datum, usually on a land topographic map. While most of us are familiar with the labels such as "low water" and "high water," there is another more technical way to look at the water level reading. The height of the water surface above the adjacent surface water varies according to various factors. There are many different datums used for gauging water level readings, including traditional topographic maps, aerial photography, satellite images, and computer models.
